Chickens are the first breed of animals that you will be able to rear in Stardew Valley.

They are important in supplying eggs, and from eggs, you can make mayonnaise and other stuff.

Here's how you can take care of chickens and make them happy in Stardew Valley.

Ensure they have enough food

Chickens, like other animals in this game, feed on hay.

You need to make sure that they get a full supply of hay every day. It's to keep them happy and full so that you get your steady stream of egg supplies each day.

The first thing you need is a silo. This is especially crucial during winter when the animals don't go out.

You can build a silo by asking Robin the carpenter. Her shop is northeast of your first farm.

To build a silo, you need:

• 5 copper bars
• 100 stones
• 10 clay
• 100g

You can get clay from digging the soil, copper bars from smelting copper ores with a furnace and stones from breaking rocks.

Once you have a silo, you can store 240 pieces of hay at one time. If you need more hay to cope with the number of animals, feel free to keep building more silos.

How to get hay

There are two main ways to get hay.

The first is by using a scythe and cutting the grass on your farm. If you run out of grass, you can buy grass starters from Pierre for 100g each and plant them on your farm.

Every time you cut some grass, you will get some hay. The hay is automatically put into the silo without you needing to transport it.

The other way to get hay is by buying them from Marnie, the animal seller. She sells them for 50g each, which is rather pricey.

You need to manually feed the chickens

Once you have a silo built, you will see a supply of hay from inside the coop.

Grab some hay each day from the supply and place them manually on the feeding "bench".

You will need to do this manually for the regular coop and the big coop.

However, if you upgrade it to a deluxe coop for 20,000g, it has an auto feeder, so you no longer need to place them manually for that particular coop.

Talk to them every day

Also, remember to talk to them each day by clicking on the chickens. If they're happy, they will show a heart symbol.
